Nissan Stagea Stereo/Headunit Removal and Fitting
Nissan Stagea Stereo/Headunit Removal and Fitting
I've fitted a fair few stereos to cars before, but I have to say the Stagea is the most intimidating to begin with. The good news is that it's easy peasy once you know how, so don't let the pictures scare you.
Remember to disconnect the battery. Though it's pretty safe if you have the right connectors we don't want any accidents.
Firstly. Whatever you do, DO NOT try to remove the fascia that surrounds the headunit and heater control unit. It's screwed in, and you'll break it. You must first remove the heater vents above, and the gear surround below - in no particular order. So let us begin...
The heater vents - and surrounding fascia - can be removed by unsecuring the clips located at either side - 2 on the right, one on the left - and above. I done this using a screwdriver, as below:
The following image shows the exact type of clips which secure it in place - you may have your own preferred method. The order of images is left, top, and right:
And the exact location of the clips, you can view by the holes, here:
The whole unit should now slide out easily.
Next, you must remove the gear surround. This is secured by 3 clips at either side, and a screw behind the ashtray. Remove the ashtray - just give it a tug - and remove the bolt, as shown below:
Now moving to the rear of the gear surround, where the little pocket is at the back, get your hands in there and give it a good pull. The clips should release and the surround should lift out. If you're having any problems, you can see in this image the little blighters that are holding it in:
Remove the connections for the cigarette lighter and you should be able to manoeuvre the surround out of the way. You'll find this easier with the car in neutral, so get the handbrake on and keys at the ready.
You will see 4 large screws securing the fascia, headunit and heater control unit. 2 above, and 2 below. Remove these, lift out the headunit, and you should be left with this:
Cripes.
It should be self explanatory by this point. The headunit is secured by 4 bolts at each side. Your new headunit should bolt straight in without any need for a cage. Before you continue though, you may have to partially dismantle the structure securing the headunit, fascia and heater control to remove the old one. It would be easy to get impatient at this point...be careful.
Unless you are planning on cutting up all your wires, bearing in mind you're unlikely to find a schematic for a Stagea, you probably just want to plug and play with a proper ISO connector. Like the following, which you can see attached to the new headunit's own ISO connector. The one you need is the one with the two white plugs on the left:
Which will connect straight to the OEM plugs shown below:
I had some amount of trouble finding the right connector, having been told I needed a Micra one. The answer is you need a very specific Micra one. A 2000 4-speaker Model.
The part code for the connector that fitted my S1 Stagea, is PC2-76-4, bought from Halfords. It was the last one they had left so I don't suppose they are common.
Refitting is the reverse of removal.
The only other niggle, which I'm yet to sort out, is that you need an adaptor for the aerial lead. You can see the original above the OEM plugs above, with the two pins. I assume these are for the dual polarity aerials or whatever it's called - which are located in both of your rear side windows. I need to do some further investigation into this...
There have been reports also of having to swap a couple of wires on the connector....I haven't encountered this yet and I will update if I do.
Now once you're done, you can do what everyone does and see how loud it goes
