I know I have to get it, even if unused for a decade! I'm looking at a Lotus next year, and a 2002-2003 at £12-15k is a mammoth task, a 2010 would be £32k+!
If only there was a way to re-register a car! What if I export it to France for a few months, then import it again as a 2010 or something......
10 reg is defintly going to be issued march til july next year. Followed by 60, then 11 and 61. If you read different then I'm afraid you must have been misinformed!

I also think it would be a good investmentin the long run. Though £25 a year to hold on retention. Or I could spent my money on a low spec ka or something, just to use the plate. I wander if a Ka handles like an Elise thou?

Marsdendean Its regs such as bo10 cks and other "rude" or inapporiate regs which are not being sold
that'll be better in 2011

As others have said, can't put a newer reg on an older car. I think technically you're not even supposed to buy a plate like a '10' without a car to put it on - that's why they ask you that on the phone as a formality but obviously they don't check up on it or really care

That is fine mate. Spoke to DVLA on the phone and they are happy to supply new plates on retention certificate to be held, or given as a gift.

Stoney Retention certificate costs £25 and lasts 12 months, then you must pay every year to hold it.
Yes this part is true, can't remember the cost but we had a plate on retention for a few years when we sold the car and then didn't register it to another, and I think we could have done that indefinitely.

As I understand it you hold it forever, current annual charge is £25. Though if you forgot to pay your 25 you would be gutted if a unique and valuable plate somehow got reassigned!
I think it is also £80 to assign it to a vehicle, which you pay only once, unless you want to transfer it to a different vehicle again (can put car plates on bike or vise versa also if you wish.)
