Bit of an update:
Took delivery of my retracting mirror package, consisting of 2 mirrors (from different cars), both resprayed in non standard colours, 2 full door looms, mirror control relay box, bracket & 10mm nut. Kit was cheap cause the mirrors didn't match and weren't standard colours.
Broke out my bench supply to discover that one of the mirrors wasn't quite right, it retracted and opened out fine but the mechanism for adjusting the glass position only went in one direction. Stripped it completely to pieces and cleaned everything, regreased with white silicone grease and put it back together, job done
I have now stripped the mirrors completely and both mechanisms work great:
Irritatingly to get the mechanisms out of the mirrors you have to remove the pins from the plug on the end of the wire. The hole in the mirror that the wire exits through isn't large enough for the plug and some of the wires are soldered straight onto the board for the retraction motor. However as with all Toyota plugs the pins are easily removable :thumbup:
I'm waiting on some 96+ mirror glass which have heater elements built in, which are coming end of next week. The connector on the back of the glass is the same as the connectors used on the directional mirror motors, so I can nick the plug off my existing mirrors. I've got the door looms so I have all the appropriate plugs and extra pins for the connectors and the like. My car already has the retracting mirror wiring in the cabin loom so that end is plug'n'play.
Shouldn't take too long. The relay widget came with the metal bracket and nut to mount it to the crash structure which is its factory position. It sits underneath the steering column next to the control box for the doors like so:

Except I am not swapping my door looms but instead nicking the wires and pins/plugs from the spares as I have made too many changes to my looms! Speaker upgrades, total closure wiring, etc. And also I currently have neither heated glass or retracting mirrors, where as JohnnyC's guide (1st one) he has heated mirrors to start with, and ChrisW (2nd one) doesn't bother with heated glass.

found out recently stuff like this is called OEM+ apparently, where you upgrade to bit off higher spec models, or newer ones, or other cars by the same company!
Had to shell out on some CV joints today as mine is now making a hell of a racket. CLONK CLONK CLONK at low speeds and a constant transmission whine the faster you go (hope the 2nd noise is down to the CV as well!). Managed to get some lightly used ATS CV joints (upgrades!) with attached driveshafts that will fit my hubs & LSD for £150 and I reckon I can shift my driveshafts + 1 working CV joint for half that.
Didn't want to spend money on it but needs must I suppose :thumbdown:
