Lexus is200 1JZ GTE vvti build
Lexus is200 1JZ GTE vvti build
I swapped my 1jz into my is200 about a year ago, I had posted this build thread on another dead forum. So alot is copied and paste but updated.
This is my IS200 sport navigator, I have had her for about 7 or 8 years the engine has always been standard and slow, last year I bought the TTE supercharger kit and fitted it etc, it was much better power wise but i wanted more and I i wasn't truly happy with the way the engine picked up rpm with the supercharger fitted. So I decided to go for a 1JZ.
Some pictures as she stood before the swap:
Current mods:
- TRD sideskirts and rear skirt
- TRD Hoop Spoiler
- Some aftermarket front splitter which is smashed to pieces and will be replaced
- D2 racing coilovers
- Twin HKS hiper silent back boxes (which are far from silent)
- Straight through decated exhaust
- Blitz Techno Speed Z1 18's
- Twin 12" genesis subs and genesis amps vibe speakers.
Mods in this build:
- 1JZ GTE vvti (from a chase)
- R154 Gearbox (I want the v160 but at £4k i cant afford it)
- EMU Masters ecu (thankfully mostly wired up and came with engine)
- Tomei fuel regulator
- Walbro 255 fuel pump
- Cusco chassis braces and struts front and rear
- Front end suspension rebuild, new bushes etc
- Change diff ratio from 3.9:1 to 4.1:1 using pinion and crown from auto is200
- Aluminium rad
- Some cheapo intercooler
- plus lots of other bits... I forget :p

Cusco Chassis braces
Some intercoooler - Needs to be bigger
ECU
So it begins
It decided to rain the week I took off to start the build
Engine fits like a glove, but on wrong engine mounts so I have ordered different ones, for now its sitting on blocks of wood so I can workout everything else.
Next was the wrong rad... isn't going so well
Return line
FPR all plumbed in and working
I posted by accident, and cant seem to edit so carrying on -
Wiring wasn't easy, I used the 1G FE loom to help wire in both ecu's to get the car working
Plumbed in the return line, I had put the walbro 255 lph pump in the year both when I supercharged it.
FPR and fuel line plumbed in and working
Useful
At this point I have the correct rad and the intercooler fits nicely. The engine turns over and I am getting sparks from 1 of the coil packs but not the other 2 (wasted spark)
After a week of checking and rechecking wires I decided to remove the 1JZ loom which someone else had wired up to work with the EMU Master ecu. I was sure there was a wiring fault in the loom somewhere so i stripped the loom completely back to basics, removed about 3'000 random wires for vacuum system etc which i wouldn't be using and then started to remake the loom from scratch. The old loom was about a meter to long anyway so I was pleased to have done this.
Finished
Couldn;t find any major wiring problems... all back in with new loom... and it still didn't ****** start.. So as a last resort I checked the ecu itself - i was told it was fine when i bought it with the engine but it was the only component left that could be at fault. and well it was.
I sent it back to manufacturers who repaired it for not a lot of money. Although wasn't happy that it was sold as working. Anyway plugged it in and it fired up straight away.
Here are some other pictures from the build some are out of order.
Custom 1 piece prop and dodgy bit of mild steel exhaust between the stainless steel sections...
Power steering
Since then I had the car tuned running 293whp and around 340bhp at the engine at14.5psi. It drives very nice and god **** is it fast. And being a 1jz 340 is barely above standard tune so much more to come.
I have had trouble with the alternator which blew my coil packs now replaced and next will be changing the R154 as it is now jumping out of 1st gear. I have another one to swap over and will rebuild the first one with better internals. While the engine is out Im going to dual fuel pump it and with a bigger fuel rail and denso 850cc injectors. After which i will get the car retuned but max the psi on the turbo which with these singles is about 18psi.
Also I need to fit new bushes for the rear and brakes on the front.
If anyone else is ever thinking about doing a 1JZ swap into an is200 then do it, i wish i had done this years ago, it brings the car alive. The swap is simple as well, there isn't a lot of custom work, most parts apart from the prop are standard. Also people have used the standard 1jz ecu so no need for the standalone. All in it cost me between £5 and 6k and worth every penny.
Awesome build mate. Make it look simple!

DO IT!!! you wont regret it! It took me 1 day to remove the 1g fe and have the 1jz with gearbox in place to work out all the other bits. I really regret not doing this years ago, the car has been transformed into a monster! It cost me around £5000 I have removed engines before but never done an engine swap from a different car before but its so easy. The wiring isn't too difficult but requires some study!
Only thing I will say is if you want more big power in future go with the 2JZ but the 1JZ does sound and pull well also. I am suing the R154 gearbox which is strong etc but The one i have is now jumping out of first. I have bought another one to swap over and I hope this one is better while i rebuild the first one.
The only let down has been the gearbox, not for jumping out of first but because they are a tad heavy and clunky, they dont suit the lexus's luxury side. People have started to use a cheap bmw box with an adapter plate which are alot cheaper and alot more common, hopefully they change gear better also.
Oh and DO IT!!!!!
