Spoke to my mate he's got a better memory than me an done a lot more to scooby s than me his is 600bhp

[06/01 19:36] Starvin: The bit in the top left? Pretty sure that's the Amal valve - primitive factory version of a boost controller
[06/01 19:37] Starvin: Have a habit of the internal diaphragm perishing and either bleeding boost or just outright not working at all n usually the reason for upgrading to a proper boost controller.

Yeah it's basically the original factory boost controller. If I remember rightly, Diaphragm is supposed to stay shut until enough pressure builds to deliver turbo boost when it then opens. Engine/turbo then rely on ecu readings and fuel defender cut off for controlling it. Typically when it dies it either stays open all the time which results in ages for the turbo to spool up and then the sudden surge causes the fuel defender to cut in or, it stays shut permanently and never actually delivers boost. As you discovered the hard way, the fuel defender is a ******* harsh method of stopping things going wrong lol! Ironically it can actually cause quite a lot of damage long term cos it often causes brutal knock and crank wobble.
