New battery
However, a couple of issues I was hoping would be resolved still exist, so does anyone have any ideas what could be causing these?
1. Idle is still quite low, around 400rpm
2. When stopped, dash lights dim, and battery meter drops to the thick white line above 9V (not sure what voltage that is)
Or could it just be that this battery might have been sitting around for a while and after a bit of driving and allowing it to charge up fully it'll be fine?

I put my new battery in this morning and all is now well, car starts perfectly and doesn't try to stall everytime I stop :thumbup:

Dark Samurai Try ECU reset for the idling problem mate?Well the car's been sitting with a dead battery for a few weeks so the ECU should be fully reset! Can actually feel it as the throttle response and gear changes aren't how they used to be!
James S Try giving it a good run mate, will probably need a good charge.I'll give that a go, maybe take it for a motorway run in a bit.

A fully charged healthy battery should read about 12.4ish volts, so when you turn on your lights they will be powered by 12.1-12.2 volts.
Now when you start your engine the alternator will supply anywhere between 13.8v to 14.3v dependent on what the voltage regulator is supplying contain within the alternator.
So now you can see why the light go brighter when engine is running as the bulbs are running at anywhere up to 14.v, so by pure nature they will shine brighter due to greater voltaage.
So if you see a difference of brightness/dimming even on idle, please do not worry too much as this seems to confuse a lot of people, as they think the battery/alternator is faulty.
One small point, if you buy a brand new battery and it is slightly discharged from storage, it should only need a maximum of ten mins running at idle to bring it back to a healthy 1260sg fully charged state as the chemicals contained within is capable of causing the reaction to bring it up to this state.

you need the ignition on to make that meter work.
when ignition switched on the battery voltage can drop as low as 11.4v once it has powered up the ignition, primed the fuel pump, dash lights on, etc etc,
and do not rely too much on the dashboard voltmeter reading less than 12v without engine running.

I carry a £600 battery tester analyser in my works LandRover that is endorsed by Jaguar/Landrover, this authorises me to replace batteries under warranty from the results produced.

So perhaps it's the low idle that's causing the problem? The last time I had it in they couldn't find a fault but suggested cleaning the throttle body (or something like that) might help..........is that something I should consider doing or probably won't make any difference?

Yep a small amount of dimming I'd accept, but this is dimming too much, it goes really dull although I do feel perhaps part of the reason is the low idle - when stationary if I gently press the accelerator and bring the revs up to about 800rpm, the dash looks fine and the battery meter reads a better voltage.
So perhaps it's the low idle that's causing the problem? The last time I had it in they couldn't find a fault but suggested cleaning the throttle body (or something like that) might help..........is that something I should consider doing or probably won't make any difference?
