My Toyota MR2 build thread - 1994 GT-S
It's the same one, but just now it has no cracks in it! Fitted new sidelight clusters too, smartens it up.So seeing as Dan and I are going to Le Mans on Wednesday I thought it would be a good idea to service the car! Turns out Toyota forgot the oil filter off my last order :Fish: but I'll sort that out on Monday. Today was quite busy:
New ignition coil (Of course it's in a ridiculous place, UNDERNEATH the fusebox)
New sparks and rotor arm (You've seen earlier in the thread how much of a pain that is with the chargecooler in the way)
New front discs, because my old ones were VERY odd, more on that in a minute
Rebuild both front caliper carriers
Fit a 2nd hand passenger side arch liner as my old one worked loose and the tyre rubbed through it. You can see this in my last post in the picture of the bumper support bars the bodyshop made.
Remove all the ICE gear to make way for camping gear
Once I got the ignition coil off, I took it off the bracket to find this:

The coil grounds through the bracket so it's no good if it's rusty. New coil and bracket cleaned up:

Now, this is why you never buy cheap brake discs. My front discs had worn down, here is new next to old:

Looks like only a few mm of wear which is fine on brake discs. But they'd developed a severe lip around the inside: (you might have to click the image and open it up big to see what I'm talking about)

With the lip on the inside, you can't see it easily and no one ever checks for lips there, normal practice is to check on the outside edge of the disc. The problem is it had done this to my brake pads, which were about 1500 miles old!

This meant that when I thought I still had loads of pad wear left, in fact I had a lot less... fortunately I caught it early. I actually got an MOT advisory for low pad wear on my last set of front pads, and it was upon replacing them that I discovered they were this shape (but more worn!)
Still left to do is an oil change (once I get a filter), fuel filter change, wire up the 2nd SPAL fan and tidy up the boot. Then it generally needs a vacuum and the glass cleaning, and maybe the driver's side window tightening up as it's started rattling.

Yesterday I moved the USB port for the memory stick. It used to be:

Not very tidy.
So I bought a switch blank from Toyota for a whopping £3 and a USB backplate from eBay like this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/290536226511
This has a specific kind of USB wire which has a full USB plug on both ends - most plates like this use a small 10 pin plug for motherboards. Having a USB plug on the end means it will plug straight into the Kenwood.
I unscrewed 1 USB port from the metal plate and trimmed the edges of it slightly (it was a bit too big to fit inside the clips of the switch blank, so a little had to be taken off the edges where the screws are).
