Is the UniChip a realistic upgrade?
Is the UniChip a realistic upgrade?
Basically I was looking into N/A tuning for my 1G-FE and finding little or no result from anything.
There's a few things people claim to give minor performance gains, mainly the following:
Decent Cat Back Exhaust
Sports Catalyst
Induction Kit/K&N Filter
De-Cat Manifold
However I was speaking to Mark at TDI about external electronic tuning for the IS200. Namely, the Camcon and UniChip and I was told the following...
"The Camcon offers cam timing and air/fuel ratio optimisation, and the Unichip offers ignition timing and air/fuel ratio adjustment. Ideally you should have both as camshaft and ignition timing are key to performance enhancement"
After our discussion it obviously got him thinking, and he contacted UniChip and asked if you can use one of the outputs to control the VVTi actuator, and it appears you can.
Therefore meaning that a UniChip is now effectively a 2 in 1 enhancement as it performs the role of the CamCon aswell!
So aside from just letting you all know what I found out, I would like to know from anyone who has experience with either of these products or knows about engine tuning on the IS200 etc....
Realistically what sort of performance increase could I expect from an upgrade like that, assuming I had it mapped specifically for 99RON fuel? (I'd also get a 2nd map done for normal fuel incase I wasn't near a shell station at the time)
The only performance (ish) mod I have so far is a K&N panel filter, would any of the mods I listed above in particular be of extra gain to the UniChips capabilities?
Moley has a UniChip still I think.
I think our old HKS Hi-power (not silent hi-power) gave us a tiny little kick more bhp.
We had a K&N FIPK V2 kit on it too, but I think you'd need a decent HKS exhaust and stuff to get any noticeable gains.

Gord The standard is200 engine is very hard to get any extra power out of it mate using external electronic tuning, the cost of buying fitting & mapping for just a few extra bhp.
The only way to get that bit more is supercharger or turbo.
ps. 99% of any is200 that Mr Tdi has worked on, he has fooked them up. Im sure others will tell you the same.

in my unichip thread there was an IS200 with it fitted showing a dyno graph as proof of bhp...
http://www.outlawjapclub.co.uk/forum/sho...=54&page=8
The dyno chart reads as 164.2BHP, but that's still a 10bhp increase over the stock setup...
I just would not advise you to go to TDI
So nothing wrong with tuning the engine N/A then, just not by them?
Can anyone recommend anywhere around oxfordshire/buckinghamshire that could be relied upon to do a stable tune with it?
And I take it you've sold yours by now Moley?
Interesting news about the chip being a camcon.
With regard to the other mods, for best results, do all the things on your list above THEN get it mapped.
How mappable is the Unichip? Would it work with an uprated pulley on a charger? (with other supporting fuelling mods.)
TDI do not have a good reputation amongst members here. Most experienced ones would advice against listening to them or letting them near your car. (However they worked on my car before I bought it, and I had no problems with their work.)
