What is it? Cleaning it has seemed to cure all the problems I've been having - the low idle, lack of power, sometimes no response from the engine.

The car's back to being perfect again, can't believe it was such a cheap and simple fix, was really worried there was something serious wrong!

It's one of these...

[Image: 1fc1c1c2db5852e08ffc380475e2633610e9d07f...88568b.jpg]

Basically just a round flap that blocks the air inlet, attached to a cable which is controlled by the throttle, foot to the floor = flap wide open and visa versa.

EDIT: Did you clean it yourself or get it cleaned by someone else?

He knows what it is, I think he meant, what is it that stops the cars performance and smooth idle etc

Well if that's what he meant, then I would say chances are it just got a bit gumed up over time and wasn't moving freely, which meant the engine was getting too much/not enough air for the throttle setting.

Cheers Sprinter, lol your original thought was correct - I was asking what it actually was!

Surprised it had such a big effect on everything, but suppose it makes sense, if it was struggling to open would explain why the idle was low, and why it wouldn't respond quickly either.

They cleaned it at Lexus (not much chance of me doing it when I had no idea what it was Blush), I gave them the symptoms, they said the throttle body needs cleaning and £65 later my car is now finally back to normal

Not much use if you don't know what a throttle body even is though! I don't think £65 is bad actually. My dealer would certainly charge me more.

Confusedad: It was a tough call to make, but the Supercharged IS200 is being retired. Confusedad:

PCV passes oil vapour back into the intake. This can gum up the IACV (idle air control valve) which is what lets a small amount of air past the throttlebody to allow the engine to idle. That's quite common.

They might've recalibrated & cleaned your TPS as well (throttle position sensor). This is the black lump that sits on the end of the shaft through the middle. It tells the ECU how open the throttle is (i.e. how flat to the floor your foot is) and also has a switch in it that engages when the throttle is shut, to tell the ECU that it should be idling.
