Front Brakes question
Front Brakes question
I have recently aquired an IS200 and there seems to be some sort of problem with the front brakes. When stopping at a junction, when the car is almost stopped, there is grating, whish I assume is the abs coming on for some reason? I haven't had the wheels off to have a look but can someone give me some pointers as to what to check, I am not very mechanically minded unfortunately and if I get someone to check the car I would like to know what I am getting them to look for. Thanks
I not mechanical either but my ABS feels like the brake pedal is smacking my foot back.. grating noises in my cars usually means the brake pads are worn out again and the little spikes holding the brake pads on are grating into my brake discs .. my credit card tells me this is bad ! Don't drive far or fast til someone technical does tell you what you check for
Ok folks, looking like pads may be the culprit then? It just feels like the abs is coming on and it vibrates through the pedal. The light isn't coming on but once or twice the light has come on on start up and the trc flashing but its gone off again once the car has been stopped and used again thereafter. I feel a bit stupid cos I have never really had cars with abs on them, believe it or not, and am not familiar with it! Used to driving about in a 25 yr old golf! Thanks for advice :thumbup1:
If the pads are grinding, you will feel it through the pedal. The ABS would be more violent through the pedal than if it was just the pads. But if you have no point of comparison, you wouldn't know! I would say to try braking hard on gravel and then you should notice how the ABS feels, however, this is not a great idea if your pads are low, as it will only damage the disks more! If the pads are really bad then they may have damaged the disks already and you may have to change both. But investigate further before changing anything.
Whip the wheels off and check the disks and pads is the best place to start, certainly. If you are not up to doing it yourself, then many brake places will give you a "Free brake check" and might be worth a go.
New pads on but its still doing the grinding thing. Must be something more sinister, brakes working fine and no lights coming on for abs. No codes up when plugged in either. Did find a leaking shocker and a nip in one of the brake flexis tho! The list for repairs seem to be growing daily, no wonder the car was for sale.
