go on ebay buy a blank key - careful as some have longer blades, they work but are a tad bigger.
get it cut and jus swap the insides over.
every now and then check if the litle screw is still tight - you key cracked because the screw was loose.
It shouldnt make any difference how long the battery is out of the key fob for, i have recently put a battery in a key that has been without for more than 3 years - it works fine.
