Picked up an OEM sat nav dash unit - retro fit a TomTom?
It's the older, smaller screen (5inch?), which has a problem with the screen flickering. He assures me everything else works fine (ie, the motor, and the open/close and tilt buttons)
Soooo... The idea was to get the 7" version, rip the screen out and make a thin fascia to house a 6" TomTom satnav (with the plastic casing removed) to keep it as OEM looking as poss. I'm now thinking that since the screen is 5" widescreen in this, a 5" widescreen TomTom screen should work (again, with the plastic casing removed to make it flush and OEM looking). So I'm now on the lookout for a bargain TomTom Start 25 or XXL Classic to pull apart and see if I can get it how I want, which is as follows;
1) I want the TomTom to only power on when the nav unit opens, and power off when it closes
2) It to have a live power feed only when the nav unit is open and the TomTom on (ie, not have a permanent live, so no battery drain)
3) The nav unit to close when switching off the ignition, but ideally I don't want it to open when switching the ignition on. Reason for this is I often just jump in the car, fire it up, and head off to the shops, supermarket, to a mates, down the pub etc - all places I don't need a sat nav for. I'd rather get in, turn it over, then press the button to open the nav unit, the TomTom switches on, I go where I need to go, then when I get there and kill the ignition, it closes and turns the TomTom off
So I know what I want, but there's one problem - I haven't got a friggin clue about electronics and wiring!!!!! I wouldn't know where to start to mod a TomTom to do the above (the basic inspiration for what I want was taken from here - http://www.outlawjapclub.co.uk/forum/sho...hp?t=10754), or how to implement it - I don't even possess the skills to wire the Nav into my car (which doesn't have nav as standard, so would need patching in)

The info you want is actually already on the forum. P lindbom has posted it before. The satnav will work as you describe if you follow his instructions.

Also, you're overestimating my electrical skills - I have to check a diagram before I wire a house plug! It's a shame I'm not closer to Morcombe, or Manchester, because I've seen your skills with wiring these puppies up!

You option is to solder 2 wires to the push button and rig up a relay if it doesn't have the power on feature

15-07-2019, 02:09 PM #6The reason we used the Sony satnavs is that they already have the turn on with power feature built in. im not sure the tomtom has that feature.

To make matters more complex, what I want is it to do nothing with ignition is turned on, so I have to manually open it (at which point it will switch on), but I'd like it to automatically close (and switch off) on killing the ignition (AND have the option to press the close button manually and have it power off too) - don't want much do I??!?!
I've had three TomTom standalone units, along with the application built into my work PDA (which is pretty much why I want to put a TomTom in this build - I'm just used to the way they work, and quite happy with them) but none of them have had turn with with power like the Sony's. Two have had a button on the top and the latest has the button on the back.

To be completely frank - pretty much, yes!
Although to be fair, I was mainly asking to see if it would be possible, and if it is, I'd really like to do it, but I know my limitations, and I would need physical help to achieve it. And by that, the reality is I'd more than likely need to take it someone that knows what they are doing, supply them with tea/biscuits/beer/money/etc to get it done
