The other day my engine management light came on, I had a panic and checked my engine bay. Noticed I was fully out of coolant which I have now replaced.
I bought a diagnostic cable from ebay apparently its a vag com type. I wan't to know has anyone themselves done a self diagnosis on why their engine management light has come on?
If not how much will it cost for a diagnosis.

Thanks if anyone can help

Does your VAG com cable use the OBD2 (OBDII) interface?
If the answer is yes then you should be able to use it on an Lexus IS, I use a bluetooth connection with OBDII interface with my IS and connect via bluettoth to my Android phone with both the Torque app and the Dashcommand app and both work flawlessly

when you say you brought a cable, did it come with a device? you'll need the actual code reader to get the codes, i can suggest a scangauge unit they work well. they plug into the obd2 port and then brings up any live code or stored code numbers, they are so easy to use and definately worth the money.
some garages will run a diog for free where as others try and charge. Lexus tried charging me £75 to run diogs last time i went in, where they would do it for free before. even though i just wanted them to double check i was getting the right codes.
one on ebay £60 no bids

If you where out of coolant I would seriously recommend a Head Gasket Test.

Thanks for the replies, I managed to get the fault code which is P0420, when I looked it up one of the probable causes is that 'The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly' which leads me to believe it could be the lack of coolant which triggered it.
But others have said I need a new cat converter £100 brand new? How much would the cost to fit approx
