if you swapped cars, if you go to a DVLA office, you can get permission to put the new plate the same day, (well preston office does) and then get the document later
Be aware that there is a 1 in 10 chance that the DVLA will want to inspect the car that you put the plate on, so if you get it transfered by post, you may still have to go to your local DVLA office, mine had to be inspected and it wasn't even registered.
Also be aware of 'third' party companies that charge a little extra, my GF spent over £500 for my plate which was on the DVLA's web site for £399 (which includes all fees to put it on your car). There are some good bargins on there if you look closely, I got the GF one for £250.
