My Toyota MR2 build thread - 1994 GT-S
Got the Focal components installed with the help of my housemate tonight after work. Made a massive but unsurprising difference over the broken Alpines And they're not even amped yet as I have taken the amps and subs out to make way for camping gear! Pleased with that. Tomorrow is dizzy cap and rotor arm, then Wednesday I will try and do the coolant flush and thermostat. Car is still loads better following the oil change which is good. Starting to look forward to Le Mans now!
The thermostat is a right ***** to get to on the MR2, its hard enough on the Lexus I had- good luck mate.
The one right next to the aircon unit!! make sure your exhausts are cool otherwise its 3rd degree burn time:cursing:
Doh!!
Did the rotor arm and dizzy cap last night. Boring as hell job but thought I'd write it up anyway!
Disconnect ECU-B and EFI fuses - ECU will need to learn new ignition advance from new ignition components.
Engine bay at start:
Cross brace, dump valve, chargecooler overflow, PCV system removed, accelerator cable released, coolant float disconnected:
Carbon cannister disconnected. Chargecooler off! The engine hanger you can see above the distributor is from a Celica not an MR2 - this gives the core something to mount to. This is about as far as I can move it without draining the coolant!
Close up of offending item, held in with 1 bolt either side (right one is a bit inaccessible)
Dizzy cap off and resting on top of engine, best not to remove it completely as need to remember what order the leads go in  Rotor arm exposed
Rotor arm off, distributor gear completely exposed
Shiny new parts to go on!
New vs Old, rotor arm, screws and bolts. The rotor isn't actually that bad, but the black screws were mashed. I'd had to reuse them last time and they (like most Toyota fixings) are made of cheese. Replaced the lot, don't want to get into a situation like Hurricane did with his distributor:
Inside old dizzy cap - you can see it's not *that* worn. It doesn't show up in the photo too well but there was some corrosion on the lower 2 contacts, presumably due to water and oil ingress. Pretty sure the seal had failed.
New dizzy cap to fit:
Reassembly is the reverse of removal
Sadly the work above has done nothing for my idle although the car does run smoother as would be expected. I have found yet more oil places it shouldn't be, and worse than that mayo in the catch can breather
There's nothing in the coolant, oil cap, either of the head breathers or the sparks so hopefully it's just water getting into the breather system rather than HG failure! Off to Pacific Works this evening where it will stay for the rest of the week, fingers crossed I will still be able to go to France.
