We get all our services from Virgin Media and have 2 coax cables coming into the house, one in the living room to the V+ box and one upstairs into a bedroom where the broadband modem is.

Now without paying any extortionate fees to VM, will I be able to get a cheap virgin box off ebay and just split the broadband cable into 2 and have cable TV in the bedroom too or are the broadband and TV cables carrying different information?

And if they are the same, will it actually work?

Just realised I'm being really dumb, because in my apartment they've done exactly what I've just asked - only one cable comes into the flat and they used a splitter to create one into the TV box and one into the modem.

Good idea though, I should just get a splitter and some coax cable and see if I can get the modem and TV box working upstairs together before buying another box Smile

It will work splitting the line, but as far as i know, the virgin boxes will only work with the viewing card, same as the sky stuff, so you would have to get a flashed box to work without the viewing card

If your gonna get another box then it will have to be chipped iirc.
Set top boxes and modems have to be 'married' to your line to work.
But in theory yes it's not an issue to split the line to use there services in more rooms.

And although the set top and modem run on different frequencies the line is still the same. The coax carries the whole range of frequencies needed to go to and from the virgin media hub. Hence the name 'wideband' Wink

You will need a second genuine card from virgin though, have you been sent the new nagra 3 one? I looked into this a while ago as my tv in the bedroom has a cam card slot and I can get most of the freeview channels (virgin locks some of them) I need another card to decrypt the others. These boxes people used to get it free don't work anymore.

If you have a chipped box you would need an old card.
All the cards an boxes need to be mated.
Once cards are use there generally out of the system.
New cards haven't been registered so technically no good.

Good point, forgot there was a card in there...........so would I have to go for one of those dreambox (is that what they're called?) type things? But potentially then this would work?

And would there be a risk of being found out? Would they know I have two boxes or because I already have one proper TV box they wouldn't notice?

Potentially the dreambox should work but not 100%

as for them knowing what your doing I think so but not sure how easy it would be for them to prove.
Modems an STB run differnt frequencies but so do tv channels.
That's why in bad weather ie lightning or if you have damaged cable, some channels work fine but others pixalate.
So if they notice several things they may look into it.

But if you choose to do this (I'm not condoning thus at all just advising) DO NOT use the interactive features (red button)
these work on a return feed and are seperate for each house and STB.
I use to install VM and as part of the install we had to use the interactive features on every unit installed and this was monitored.
If we failed on x number of times then they were asking why we hadn't used the feature.
