Engineer needed to make a custom centre cap!
as title suggests. One of my victrix centre caps has done a runner today And as you can imagine from an early 90's wheel, there are none to be had. I was looking to get a custom one made up which was as similar as possible to the real thing.
If you or you know anybody please let me know. All help appreciated!
Cheers
Stephen
I can't machine them myself, but if you could take off one of the remaining ones and show me what the back of it looks like I'll let you know if it's something I can draw up.
Then that would just leave you the task of finding someone to physically make it. (probably be worth getting a couple made just incase...)
Cheers sprinter. That's them.
Here is a close up:
Looking at it, it's just the face I need, it's left the mount behind...
Any chance of being able to draw these?
Is there anyone on here that you know is capable of making them. Engineering side of this is not my strong point :/
Thanks again
So is the part you need just a flat disc? Does it have any tabs/pins on the back to attach it to the mounting plate?
Now I've seen that close up picture though, I can see that the text is going to be the hardest part. Unless you can find out the name of the font that's written in, it will be incredibly hard to re-draw it to match the others with any degree of accuracy.
So it will definitely be worth seeing if you can find some wheel guru's who might know what it is.
No tabs as far as I am aware, just glue. So it is just the flat disc That im after.
I'm currently speaking to g23enigineering to see if they can help me out with getting them made to match. Maybe if it doesn't work, it's time to change font!
Thanks for your help so far mate
That writing looks cast in rather than machined. Because some of the font's cuts look to be very narrow it would probably be too intricate for most jobbing engineering shops. To make an exact replica you'd be looking at somewhere that has a tiny CNC milling machine.
It would probably work out a lot cheaper to just get 4 blank disc's made up and replacing them all.
If it was important, It would be relatively easy to get the script chemically etched onto replacement disc's, You'd just have to pop one of the originals on a flatbed scanner and make a decent image of what you want. That could then be used to make a negative mask sheet to keep the etching acid off the rest of the disc's face.
But as I said, I doubt you'll find a shop to machine something identical.

(PS. Just a thought, I'm sure I've seen a magazine called something like "Model Engineering". It's for people who build things like small scale working models of static steam engines and stuff like that. That lot must find tiny bits that they need accurately machining, So there must at least be a couple of places out there that can spin up a 1mm end mill. I might be worth popping into W H Smiths and having a little prod about in an issue to see if there's any useful adverts....... As I said, Just a thought)
Machining the text will be no problem for most CNC machine shops that know what they're doing, my boss' brother makes whole components that are no bigger than a pea with relative ease. So some narrow text should be no problem.
Personally my advice would be to either try to find a genuine spare, or just get a new set made up with a similar text.
