Struggling for power
Struggling for power
I was out yesterday and had to make a fairly long trip out to kent and back, and not sure if it was the heat, but the car was really down on power........on steepish hills, the car was actually slowing down going up the hill which I've never experienced before.
I was out again at night and the car was back to its usual self, so it has to be the heat that was causing it, but having said that it's been hot before and while you do feel a slight loss of power when the AC is working hard, it's never been as bad as it was yesterday.
Was anyone else suffering the same thing, or could there be something wrong with the car, and if so what?
Wow that certainly doesn't sound right. It does sound like the heat but the heat certainly shouldn't be causing a problem that bad (unless the other auto owners say they all had the same problem yesterday ?).
Wonder if its worth checking your air filter, seeing if it's perhaps really clogged up or perhaps something big got into the air intake ?
I drove to Southampton and back yesterday with the a/c on and did not have any issue with my auto IS300.
I have noticed in other cars I have driven, that on hot and humid days the cars lose their edge, simple as engine run better on cold air.
As Steve suggested, check your air filter.
Cheers guys, where is the air filter and what should I be looking for? :o
It's under the bit with the chrome strips and Lexus logo in the pic below :
There is a clip holding it down at the front edge and rear edge. Release those, and it should lift up and out as below. The OEM filter is white in colour (though poss grey or black depending on how dirty it is lol !), my one pictured is a K&N filter.
The left side as you look at it is where the air is coming in, so where the dirt should all be trapped try and shake/blow/etc the dirt out from that side (i.e. don't drive it through to the right side, which is the engine side).
Thanks Steve, here's what my filter looks like, any cause for concern?
That does look very dirty (though not disastrous), how long since it's been changed ? The second picture shows the dirtier side, which you would expect, that's the intake side (i.e. the side where you'd expect all the rubbish to build up). Seems particularly dirty in the middle of that second pic.
No idea to be honest, just had a look back at my service receipts, the one in Nov 2004 says "AIR FILTER" on it, none of the others do..........does that mean it hasn't been replaced since then or is just hasn't been billed for separately?
hover it for the time being and then get KnN

the 5th one down
Air filter is normally changed every 30K by Lexus I think, which IMHO is not often enough.
I agree with Y2KANJAR, clean it out for now (if you use a hoover, do it from the side that's uppermost in your second picture) and replace with a K&N at some point.
