my mate lives above a pub that uses a "dreambox" and its interfering with his internet and router

is there anyway he can get around this like using a static IP or something?

Switch his router to a different channel. Trouble is, a lot of the channels overlap with each other, so even a channel with a different number can overlap.

Channels 1, 6 and 11 are non-overlapping for 802.11g wireless.

Alternatively, use an 802.11n system on the 5 GHz band, which is a lot less crowded (though not all 802.11n systems use 5 GHz).

Wireless signals are fine, i can’t connect to the receiver via Ethernet because it’s ip address has been taken by the dreambox and it won’t work if i assign a different ip address for it

How has it taken the ip address? Have to admit I don't know a lot about this but is it a shared internet connection or something?

Carpediem Wireless signals are fine, i can’t connect to the receiver via Ethernet because it’s ip address has been taken by the dreambox and it won’t work if i assign a different ip address for it

Eh ? The Dreambox should be on its own Internet connection, and even if something on that network has the same IP address as you, then it shouldn't matter, since your IP address is on an entirely different (private network).

Something's not setup right there. Are you sure you're not connecting to the pub's network instead of your own one ? (e.g. maybe they have free Wi-Fi)

no the pub uses the wifi from my mate upstairs, we all know each other so sharing is a commodity lol

so i think the dreambox is connecting via my mates router

Lol ok, well what should be happening is that everything is using DHCP to get an address for your mate's router, then it will give out its own addresses and ensure there are no conflicts.

It sounds like *maybe* the Dreambox has a static IP address, and your mate is happening to use the same address (whether that's another static one, or a DHCP one).

I suggest checking the IP address of the Dreambox (the router should be able to tell you what's connected to it), and then changing things so that the router can give out non-conflicting addresses to anyone else. So either change the range of DHCP addresses given out by the router, or assign a different static IP address to your mate's PC.

ahc ool cheers stevie

i know nothing of these things so im not great at explaining it

i think what its doing is as you've said above is trying to assign the same IP to seperate devices causing the conflict
