Hi,

I went and had a look at the Uni that I'm going to in September. Noticed they had a wireless Router for each floor with 6 antennas (for the 6 rooms?). Now my PC is quite old and currently has a built in Ethernet port onto the motherboard.

Just wondering what to do so that I can pick up wireless signal. Do I simply get a USB stick thing that can pick up the wireless signal, and will this be quick?

Saw somebody streaming live football through their laptop so must be a descent speed, will a USB adaptor be quick enough, or do I need a built in wireless card?

The uni was really nice, everything is new: Brand new or 4-5 years old it seems. Town is also nice, had a quick walk up the main street with the shopping centre on?

Glad I picked that Uni as its not too far away and seems nice Smile. Just a matter of getting the wireless sorted out.

USB Wireless Reciever or Wifi Card in pc :/

Seen a Belkin one. I think it also depends on strength of router as well as how many walls it has to travel through :/.

If anybody has any good ones they can link me to ide much appreciate it Smile

Don't use Belkin. Other brands of wireless USB adaptor should be OK. Remember that wireless is cack and if one person on your access point has a **** old slow device that it will slow everyone down. Not really sure why they're using wireless in halls!!

I've got a netgear rangemax one, cost about £30-40 I think back when I bought it, I used it for about 3 years straight with no problems at all.

Still works fine now Smile

Has it slowed your connection down parthiban, or no difference? (I know wired is quicker, but are you getting full connection through it?)

Yep when I was in my apartment that was my internet connection, modem was in living room, desktop in bedroom with this USB stick plugged in. Download speeds were fine, even used to stream video from PC to TV and had no problems with that either.

Router was about 30ft away and through 2 solid walls which I imagine won't be the case in your halls.
