Wireless Belkin N router as an access point?
Wireless Belkin N router as an access point?
I am soo stuck at the moment.
As many of you are aware I have got 50mb broadband, with a N router connected to my laptop via a N dongle.
My ps3 is not N rather G
I have bought a Belkin N router and wish to connect this to my existing router (D Link provided by Virgin) and use the Belkin one as a Access Point.
Then this access point will be connected to my ps3 via ethernet, providing the PS3 with in theory N capabilities?
Now I have tried everything to set this up, the Belkin router is capable of being a AP as the option is there within setting (through its ip address)
I have followed many instructions and cannot get it to set up.
Any help appreciated !
I have disabled DHCP and also changed the IP address of the Belkin router to sit within the exsiting DCHP.
My D link router address is 192.168.0.1, the DHCP range is 100-199, so i set the Belkin with 192.168.0.150
Where am I going wrong?
I'm not sure about this but I think both routers have to be able to do it to set it up as you wish, it's not enough for just one of them to be compatible. I have two identical Netgear routers but one is slightly newer and can therefore be used as an access point so wanted to do the same thing, but couldn't because the other one doesn't accept it.
Obviously that could all be rubbish though and someone might have a fix
Could you use a plug in extender like this?

cheaper then the router i bought, just will pack that up and return it to argos
You will need to configure the router to 'bridge' its wireless and ethernet interfaces for it to work as you have described.
Also remember if you're running 2 access points in the same location they need to have different SSIDs (names), and be on different channels!
Scratch that, I've re-read your post. What you need is for the Belkin to function as a wireless bridge, NOT an access point. When configured as an access point it will be expecting wireless clients to connect to it. It won't be expecting to have to connect to another access point.
