HTC Desire Z - my new phone
HTC Desire Z - my new phone
Just received my new phone (ordered from Amazon.co.uk), an HTC Desire Z :
It's running Android 2.2 (Froyo), with HTC's Sense add-ons.
This is my first Android phone, after being on Windows Mobile 6.5. I'm planning to stick with the stock ROM for a bit, since I'm new to Android and need to get used to it. I will root the phone so that I can install apps that need root capability, but won't worry about being able to flash custom ROMs just yet.
Initial impressions of the phone are good, it looks and feels very solidly built. Currently it's just charging up, I will need to move my contacts/calendar etc over to it. More info from me as I get to use it more !
Nice one mate, so did you buy it SIM-free then? Yep the HTCs don't really need to be played about with that much, the ROMs are well designed, you probably won't necessarily even need to root it for normal use.
I'd be interested to hear whether you find a huge difference between typing on a physical keyboard vs. the on-screen one (and even Swype) - never had a phone with a physical keyboard so wondering whether my next should have one or not.
Yep, I bought it SIM-free from Amazon. I'm still locked into my current Vodafone contract, too soon to upgrade. But as soon as I can, I'll switch to a 12-month SIM-only contract, so I don't get locked into another 24 months.
Yeah I realise I won't need root for normal use. Just that my IT background is in Unix, which is what Android/Linux are based on, so I fancied a play, I've already installed the Android SDK on my PC
I'm the opposite to you in that I've never had a touch-screen phone without a physical keyboard. Whether my need to have one is based on reality or just that I "feel" I need one, I'm not sure !
There are some horrible physical keyboards around (e.g. the Motorola ones), HTC seem to have sussed how to make nice ones.
The CPU runs at 800 MHz at stock (but newer generation CPU than a lot of the older 1 GHz CPUs, so runs faster than them). Even though overclocking up to more than twice that speed (!) is already available, I'll stay at stock speed at the moment - I'm sure it'll feel a lot faster and slicker than my old phone, and I don't want to spoil myself too soon !
looks good, I love my HTC Desire, simple to use and doesn't need fiddling with to work.

On the battery front, it's too early to tell for me, obviously. Though from reading the forums, people with Desire Zs have got amazing battery life when overclocking their phones - i.e. also with the phone underclocking itself when it's not being used (why don't they do this as standard ?).

Marsdendean I'm unsure. I know the manager at Phone4you in Manchester, my Mrs is best friends with his girlfriend.
I'll give him a ring soon and see if he can shed any light?
