Video: Weird rattle, possibly heat shield related?
Lately my car has been making this annoying noise between 3k and 6k rpm. When the car is stationary the only way to make the sound appear is by revving the engine to the redline and then lifting off, but when accelerating harder than usual the sound is always present at around 3k to 6k rpm.
I thought it might have been the pre cat heat shields, but I just removed them without any result. It doesn’t matter if the supercharged is fitted or not either. I’ve not tried removing the supercharged pipes or the intercooler though. Yesterday I recorded a short video for you to hear. I put a sock on the camera to minimize wind noise, that’s why it’s all black.
Fast forward to 0:35

Does anyone recognize the sound?
I know its not much help, but my old IS200 used to do the same when cold. Sort of mid rev range. Never figured out where it came from though.
Have you tried opening different windows in the car to try and pin-point where the noise is coming from? Or get someone else outside the car when it is stood still, if you tell whether its engine bay or exhaust you'll soon be able to pin it down.
There are a couple of heat shields under the car, there is one under the back seats too.
Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I just wanted to let you know that I discovered what the problem was a while back. There was a bolt missing in exhaust joint between the manifold and the twin pipes leading up to the cat. This created a tiny leak that, when exhaust passed through rapidly, sounded like a rattle. I replaced the gasked and fitted a new bolt. Problem solved!
Nice easy fix then Patrick. Glad thats all it was.
