Hi RX8ers,

Im really thinking of buying a 231 (well havent driven one yet) as I really miss the smoothness of my old IS.

How bad are these really on fuel? I really can't justify 18mpg round town if that really is the figure as my Leon is giving up to 28mpg if I drive it like a saint.

If I drive sensibly how much am I looking to get round town as I'm a londoner so will be mostly town driving?

Ed

Lovely cars and as phil said 18 is about right around town.
Also take into account things like,,
topping up the engine oil tank,
Can suffer from horrendous flooding with a cold engine,
Coil packs,
HT leads,
Expensive spark plugs,,
Nice car tho

the flooding was a warranty recall - check it has been done, it only affected a few cars and even then only if you move the car only a few yards then turn it off.

The oil consumption can be high, but the engine only has a small oil capacity so it sounds worse then it is.

you could PM Bobby as he has one but due to work can't get on the site that often.

If you're bothered about MPG get the lower spec one, guy at work's got one and gets about 26 I think. There's no great difference between the two around town, except you get HIDs on the 231. The 6 speed is supposedly worse on fuel consumption too... that doesn't make a great deal of sense to me but there you go.

I get 22 to 25 MPG in my 192 but something to note is you have to make it hum to get it drive it too gently and the MPG goes down to 20 (Or below)

So to clarify drive it gently and you loose MPG - the exact opposite to what you would expect?

That's not totally unexpected, all engines have a point at which they are at best efficiency. Trying to do 25mph in 5th is not usually as efficient as in 4th for example, as even though the revs are lower the engine is struggling.

The best MPG seems to if I push it slightly 4,000 to 6,000 RPM most of the time insted of changing gear early - I now leave it to I get the nice noise :-)

Thats what I have read as well you cant keep the revs low as it has to dump in fuel to keep it going. Just need to get off my **** and test drive one really to see if it is worth the MPG hit. I have the feeling that I will miss the epic low end torque of my Cupra though. However RWD, 50:50 wieght distribution, LSD, Bose, HIDs and the unique engine all appeal Smile Plus will get me back in the Jap fold.......
