To be honest i don't see this matter as a mere comparison between the 2 brands its like comparing Peaches and apricots, both are similar at face value but under the skin quite a lot is different, both are Good in many ways like build quality, Performance is also very much the same (yes most would disagree here) but put a BMW 320i Inline 6 next to the Lexus IS and both specs are very similar, both are visually attractive both use similar tech and configuration as well, i.e. Front engined rear wheel drive, 6speed box, there are also 4 cylinder versions of the same spec (2ltr) so there are very many similarities, where the they start to differ is target market, type of styling etc etc, the argument in my opinion is based on personal taste really and there is no wrong answer, I just think where the Japs appeal to more people is there cost, any Jap car is comparibly cheaper to buy and maintain, which is a strong point considering Japanese cars are famous for reliability, and no one can say they don't make iconic performance cars Many of the Japanese brands have performance focussed models even Lexus.
So i think we should be open minded when discussing person tastes...
