Currently waiting to get on the dyno at SRR. Just been preceded by a Supra running 698bhp, boy was that loud (don't worry Dan, yes, I did take a picture !).

The O2 sim was fitted to my car earlier. Did lots of driving around and live mapping. I'm not entirely convinced yet that it's better overall, but we'll see after the dyno. Will need to drive it around normally for a while and see how it is in daily use. In the worst case I can always take the O2 sim off and go back to the original map. Or maybe this new map will just need fine-tuning then be perfect ? We will see.

Should be on the dyno soon.

Right, time for a summary of what happened yesterday.

I took the car down to Fusion Motorsport, and Ed fitted an O2 simulator that I'd bought off eBay. Up till now I had just one stock O2 sensor, the rear one (behind the cat) having already been replaced by a sim, and just one stock sensor in the turbo manifold (wired to both sets of manifold sensor wiring to the ECU, i.e. the ECU thought there were still 2 stock sensors in the manifold, but it was the same one sending signals to both).

The new O2 sim was connected to both the back and white wires on the connector shown in the picture. These are the sensor feeds into the ECU.

After that, we started the car up with Ed's laptop plugged into my laptop. Ed started with a new (empty) set of maps, and set some basics up from scratch, till the car would idle normally and fuel approximately right at fixed revs as we sat stationary in his workshop :

My car was still doing one weird thing that it had done last time, which is that if you plugged the laptop into the e-Manage when the engine was running, the revs dipped a lot and the car stalled. Ed couldn't explain this at all, but giving a bit of revs was a workaround. Odd.

After a while, Ed decided it was fine to have a bit of a road test. So we drove slowly around the industrial estate (ex-MoD, now a film studios and all sorts of other bits and pieces), with him doing live mapping as we went. Now I hated this bit, of course there was a lot of trial and error, and I hated it when the engine wasn't running badly (inevitable during this sort of process).

After some time we then went out on the main roads, and drove around quite a while, with Ed again altering the map at various points to try and get things setup.

Ed was happier that with the O2 sim connected, he could now more easily control the fuelling. Previously, with the stock sensor, he could try and add fuel, but the stock ECU would see this (via the stock sensor) and say "oh no you don't" and take it back out again ! We also realised that the "stall when laptop connected" problem had disappeared, no idea why.

Again after some time, Ed was happy that he could do no more on the road, and the time was approaching for our slot at the dyno, at Surrey Rolling Road (just across the road, on the same industrial estate).

We had to wait a while, there was a 697 bhp Supra already on the dyno (which we could hear from a little way off !), then it was the turn of a Clio.

Finally, our turn came, and the car was prepared for its dyno session.

This took some time, with lots of runs. Ed and Charlie (from SRR) both weren't happy with the outcome though, i.e. not as good as they'd hoped. Whilst my top-end power was fractionally up, I wasn't bothered about that, and the whole point of connecting the sim was to try and sort out the engine sometimes going rough when on a constant light throttle. They did set all the fuelling up as best they could, but they both felt that whilst putting the O2 sim in had helped, the electronic throttle of the IS200 was still interfering somewhat - e.g. when you're at a certain throttle position, there are still some electronics involved, not just a pure mechanical throttle.

Removing the electronic throttle would be possible, but unfortunately would necessitate a standalone ECU. I really don't think that's a route I want to go down, given the expense involved with that route, and also the significant time involved too, with my car being my daily driver.

The car still seemed to be sometimes throwing up some OBD-II codes, most common being P0171 and P0174 (but sometimes P0420 too). Now these are codes where the stock O2 sensors are reporting "too lean". Given there is now an O2 sim instead of these sensors, this is rather odd, and would seem to imply that the O2 sim is reporting too lean at times perhaps ? Again it may be more complicated than that, with the stock ECU still interfering based on the throttle position etc.

After so much driving round and round and round, it was difficult for me at the end of a long day to judge how the car was "really" driving now. Was it better, worse, just the same ? I mean in terms of the rough issue at low throttle (yes I know the obvious solution is always to drive at full throttle lol).

We agreed that I would try the car out on my normal journeys. That way I would much more easily be able to judge whether the combination of the O2 sim and the new map was better than before, or worse, or whatever. So in the worst case I could simply go back to the old map and remove the sim. Or maybe stick with it, and perhaps fine tune any dodgy areas in the map ?

So the jury is still out. I drove the car today and it seemed like it might be a bit better, but it's still far too early for me to tell (since the problem would vary slightly from day to day anyway). I already go the P0171/P0174 problem, which is odd. I think I will get out my multimeter and see what the O2 sim is doing.

You can select the sump thread size and sensor thread size from the dropdowns but I did think that - your sensor just isn't designed for being fitted as it is.

Just spoke to Ed at Fusion to let him know how I'd got on with the car so far, and the fact that it had started from cold ok (not an easy thing to try out when it's being mapped, unless you want to sit around for ages doing nothing !).

I told him that I'm going to do some testing on the O2 sim to compare the voltages it's putting out against the official test procedures/voltages in the online workshop manual. I was expecting that if I had to swap the O2 sim then I might have to go through another whole remap, but he said that shouldn't be necessary (though he would check it).

If it continues to drive ok (and I still haven't had a chance to do much of that yet) then it really would be nice to get rid of the stupid error codes that come up.

Overall my car seems to have been running slightly better since the recent O2 sim fitting and re-map. I'm aware this could just be a placebo effect (i.e. me imagining it's better), but we'll see how it goes. It's certainly not worse.

Had an interesting afternoon today though. I had realised that one thing I hadn't done when the O2 simulator was fitted was to reset the ECU (the stock ECU, that is). I thought that might make a difference in terms of the "too lean" codes that I keep getting, i.e. the stock ECU perhaps not re-learning since the sum was fitted. So I did that this afternoon, and then took the car out for a drive. That's when the problems started.

The car immediately started running very lean. It was idling very lean, and not keen to idle. I tried gently driving it a few hundred yards and it was really struggling. Again it was very lean, and it didn't want to go and would much rather stall. I realised that it needed to re-learn again, but was concerned that it was only re-learning versus an O2 simulator rather on what the air/fuel ratio *really* was, so it might be hard for it to learn, and the map could now be off.

I started to regret resetting the ECU, but then again, this would have happened at some point in the not-too-distant future anyway, whenever the battery was disconnected.

I tried driving it for longer, for about 13 miles, again very gently and staying off-boost. The AFR improved a bit, in that it would go along and constant revs at all, but still it didn't really want to accelerate or idle properly (kept stalling).

So I took it back to Fusion, where Ed kindly fitted me in at short notice. He put in an adjustment across the range that would put more fuel in, and I took it out for a few miles. Immediately it was *much* better and drove a lot more normally, though it was still a bit lean once I started to go on boost.

Ed did some more tweaking to the map, and it now seems to drive back to where it was before. Very interesting *touch wood* it has not thrown up any "too lean" codes since I reset the ECU. I need to carry on driving it and see if the stock ECU learns any more, and see if I get any error codes again.

But so far, so good. I'm hoping that resetting the ECU has helped it to work with the O2 sim, even though the map needed tweaking (because the mapping was done with the stock ECU having already learned using the stock O2 sensor).

I'm going back to Fusion next week for Ed to solder up all my e-Manage Ultimate wires, replacing the connectors with proper soldered joints. That can't hurt either.
