I am not a big fan of powerline, it's a massive bodge from a technical point of view. But it does work and doesn't require any setting up which are both big bonuses to the end user.

When I worked for my previous employer we used them for buying most of the kit for building servers for customers, hosting projects, etc etc. We got thousands and thousands of pounds of compensation out of them over the years, when we'd paid for next day delivery and they got it wrong. I've been told by the guys that still work at my old place that they are much more reliable these days though.

The ones you got are great value though and sounds like they're working perfectly, that's an impressive download speed! Is there a way I can test the network speed I'm getting over my powerline adapters? Is it simply a case of just trying to copy a file from one computer to another or is there an actual speed test you can do?

Copying files between 2 PCs should give you a half decent idea, but Windows filesharing has some pretty major overheads, so the speed indicated by your OS (presuming you use Windows anyway) will be lower than the actual speed attained.
Well you don't see 200mbit over mains wiring either - unless the items at both ends have gigabit NICs then you'd never be able to test it over 100mbit anyway.
Copying files between 2 PCs should give you a half decent idea, but Windows filesharing has some pretty major overheads, so the speed indicated by your OS (presuming you use Windows anyway) will be lower than the actual speed attained.

Both the PCs I have connected by powerline have gigabit network cards but I only have the 200Mb adapters so it's irrelevant :laugh:

Is that based on the internet speed though? I've only got a 10meg connection and based on download speeds that's not being limited at all, so I'm definitely getting 10Mb over powerline :biggrin:
