There are a lot of similarities between the front brakes on my MR2 and the front brakes on an IS200. Both are twin inboard piston sliding calipers, with similar carrier designs, similar sizes etc.

As the MK2 MR2 gets older more and more people are struggling with brake problems caused by poor maintenance. The boots and seals fail over time and you wind up with sticking or jammed pistons or sticking sliders. Both these problems cause the brake to be partially applied all the time, which leads to a tremendous heat buildup and massive brake wear. The excess heat can in turn can lead to warped discs, warped sliders, loss of power, loss of braking efficiency, MOT failure, and for those of you that are bothered about how clean your car is, loads of brake dust! Not to mention chewing through brake pads in record time.

Seeing as the IS200 uses the same caliper design, I'd expect to see this becoming more of an issue for IS owners over the next few years. Anyone had any problems with sticky calipers, failed slider or piston boots, etc?

I spent ages doing a full brake rebuild using the Toyota rebuild kits on the '2, I think 3 or 4 years ago. They lasted about 6 months! So I gave up and swapped the calipers for pro refurbed ones (well the rears anyway, the fronts have lasted a bit longer but are on the way out now).

Only the lesser spec JDM brakes are the sliding caliper design on Supra, the larger JDM and UK spec brakes are fixed monobloc calipers so *shouldn't* suffer from these problems as much (less moving parts = less to go wrong).

Well, surprise surprise, got the brakes off Dan's IS200 last night and lo and behold sticking slider. The lower slider boot had failed and as a result the slider was so corroded into the carrier it took about 20 minutes with a hammer and a punch to try and coax the thing out!! It was totally rusted and misshapen all the way down. The small rubber bush was melted and about 1/3rd of the way down the slider, which isn't right either (it's supposed to sit in a recess cut into the end of the slider).

Fortunately it turns out that the brakes are so similar that the sliders, bush and boots are all exactly the same as the MR2 parts that I had in stock, so we could replace the lot with new parts there and then. Cleaned all the corrosion out of the carrier with a round file and plenty of lithium grease thrown in for good measure. Should be good for a few more years!
