Car insurance...what the hell ???
Car insurance...what the hell ???
Posted this elsewhere but perhaps it would be better here.

I have just renewed my insurance, actually runs out today. I changed again this year to try and keep the price down. My previous insurer, Admiral, wanted £450 odd for the privilege so I shoped around and finally went with Hastings Direct at £383. But when the paperwork came in the post I thought I'd better phone them and declare my body kit (side skirts and front and rear lips) because in the details I could see that they counted these as modifications
So I thought I'd declare these, it can't add much to the primium, if anything.
I was so wrong after being kept on hold fo some time while they talked to the underwriters they declared that that was going to cost me ............
Wait for it..........
an additional £183
So as expected I said in that case I needed to cancel and I would go elsewhere. They were then very pleased to tell me that under the circumstances they wouldn't charge me the cancellation fee, which I think is about £55. Good of them
So after that bombshell and to cut an even longer story short I went back to Admiral (I had already cancelled my policy) and after declaring the "mods" and with a bit of discount given for staying with them for another year I got it down to £425.
I am really surprised that they can get away this for something that is, at the end the day, a dealer optional accessory.

If its a dealer accessory fitted when new then it's not a modification is it???
All insurance is a scam.
When I declared the bodykit on my Nissan they put my insurance up by £75 plus an admin fee.
They said that it was because they had to change their insurance company as my company wouldn't accept modifications.
However the following renewal they used my original company that apparently don't insure modified cars.

Yes I agree Dave but what I was getting at is that if I had bought the car with the kit already on it i would assume that it was fitted from new then I wouldn't be charged any more on my insurance but just because a kit is fitted afterwards they charged for it.
What I was told by the woman at Admiral, who only put the insurance up by a small amount is that if I didn't declare it and the items were damaged in an accident then they just wouldn't be included in the repair costs where as once declared they are covered by the insurance and would be replaced under the insurance.
Which I think is fair. After all it's hardly a performance inhancing mod!!
There are so many ifs and buts when it comes to insurance and each have there own veiw and its horrible for those trying to insure a car.
Would hate to be a young lad just passed there test would hate to think what it would cost for insurance

Mine was £680 fully comp with Admiral as a 21 year old with 3 years NCB...
i noticed recently as well (from my last car) that some also ask what optional extras are fitted. i mean, come on...optional extras come on the car from the factory. it's funny really, you could have a standard car, decide you want the sport body kit after a few years and its called a modification. doesn't matter that the sport of the said car is for all purposes the same thing.
on the plus side i finally got a more agreeable quote. it was a transfer from flux to call connect to 1answer. fluxs quote was a joke at £1.2k. i could have sworn the gov where supposed to be investigating insurance companies. to me it's like a protection rack insurance. they blame young drivers for pushing up premiums, but its just a vicious circle. not that i'm that young any more.
