Headlight Problem - Possible Wiring Fault
Headlight Problem - Possible Wiring Fault
To put you in the picture, I was sat watching TV last night and got up to get a drink. As I walked passed the living room window, I noticed it had snowed slightly - the reflection of someones headlight at the front of my drive got my attention. As I looked outside, it looked as though I had left MY headlights on, which would be fine, except I haven't used my car in over a week.
I grabbed my car keys, went outside and battled the 2 or 3mm of snow we had, and made my way to my car. First thing I noticed was the headlights were on, but no sidelights or rear lights. I started the car, which started fine, turned lights on and off which didn't help, so I opened the bonnet to fine a Relay chattering away. I quickly pulled the relay, lights went off, closed the bonnet, locked the car and went back inside where it was warm.
I don't know which relay I pulled, as it was dark, but after a quick look at the wiring diagrams, i think its the head lamp relay, which would make sense (although I am not 100% which relay I took out at the moment, I'll look at the weekend).
SO........... what I am after is has anyone else had this problem? I know it'll be an easy fix (I am a BMS engineer by trade, so wiring and relays etc is nothing to me). I just don't want to waste half a day searching for the issue, if someone can point me there in 10 seconds?
I'm thinking its possibly a faulty relay, or maybe damp getting in somewhere? I've had the car over 8 years and never had this problem, but I do get the battery going flat in winter if I don't use the car for around 2 weeks or more, so maybe its related?
Let me know what you guys think.
I'd almost guarantee water has got into the theft control unit under the dash.
You can either change the unit or bypass it, though this would stop them flashing if the alarm go off or the auto lights working.
rigga There's been a few reports of headlights being unable to turn off recently.
