Altezza Build!
The ones we make at work are only .1 thicker than mine and they are fine, f1 stuff is usually thinner than mine is so there shouldn't b so many problems! I think it's the engine vibrations, throwing the turbo about so violently its pulling at the weakest point. I am starting to think I should have just gone 3mm pipe, I may have the lightest manifold in the world bit it's not worth having to weld it up every few weeks
Wrapped some 1.6mm round primary 1 and 2 to try strengthen it to stop it cracking.
Seems to be holding up! been a few weeks now with no problem. Plan to pull it off again next week to flatten it right out and give it a proper look over to see if it's cracking and refit with a new gasket and no paste.
Finished lagging the turbo housing too. Came out of the oven with no leaks which is always good! might start to crack once it's on the car and vibrates but it should do a few months atleast. Pressings were too small so had to force it on which made it look a bit rubbish but we'll see how it goes
Been thinking about getting another cheap as chips rwd car as a little drift missile I can rag about in while I turn the tezza into more of a full blown project after she's been turbo'd
what is that stuff, ive never seen it before?
I can't say too much cos each company does it slightly different but basically you put a special insulation material (which was designed for this kind of stuff) onto the turbo housing and then cover it with very thin stainless steel sheet which is dimpled to allow for movement when the exhaust expands and to give it strength. You spot weld the stainless to the body of the turbo making sure it's welded all round to seal the insulation under it. They did a test on a manifold with EGT sensors and a thermo camera, the temp outside the manifold was 450c less so it works very well for retaining heat. It's WAY more expensive than ceramic coating cos it's so labor intensive, not sure if it's quite as good as ceramic coating though
ill stick to ceramic coating then, does look good though
Apparently it's way more effective than ceramic coating but like most race car stuff it doesn't last that long and does shake itself to pieces after a while unfortunately.
Finally went to owen developments and got some details on the turbo!
It cost £5000 new! The tr30r is designed to spool mega fast and produce lots of low end power hence the crazy torque figures. Unfortunately this means I can't use it on the altezza cos it revs too high so although it would make boost before I even turn the key, manifold pressure will rise really quickly and it will struggle to dump cos the turbines are so small. They are going to see what it's like inside anyway and will swap me for a turbo more suited to my car with v band mounts and a similar size so that's a bonus! If they can do me a straight swap I can boost before summer which would be amazing
