Today I finally managed to remove the turbo and manifold from the engine bay. Man, that was a pita!

Here it is
[Image: DSC_7829_fix.jpg]

I have no prior experience with turbus, but that doesn't look right, does it? Smile

As the sun was setting it was time for that well deserved beer
[Image: DSC_7858_fix.jpg]

I'll take a closer look at the turbo tomorrow.

Just make sure there is no excess play.

A very small amount is normal... As the slack will be taken up when oil is pressurised through it.

Check up and down
Side to side and also in and out.

Thanks for the tip, mate. I'm now pretty sure my bearings are gone. I get the feeling the axle is warped as well.

On the fun side, a package arrived from china yesterday, with a "TRD" oil cap
[Image: DSC_7864_fix.jpg]

I also picked up another set of headlights. I've ordered a bunch of stuff that I'm going to use to modify them.

Also, I've had a TTE backbox lying in the boot of the Lexus for like four months. I originally bought it for my 1.3 Yaris, but I might look into fitting it to the TS.

What's the plan with the headlights mate? Projectors?

Yes, projectors and also another mod I've been wanting to try for a long time. The projector lenses arrived the other day but I'm still waiting for a few other bits.

I've now spent countless hours searching for information about the turbocharger on my Yaris. Most people seem to think this TRD turbo is made specifically for the Yaris TS Turbo, but that seems unlikely. When the limited edition Lexus IS200 Compressor was developed Bemani/TTE used the Eaton M62 supercharger from the Mercedes SLK, C, and CLK. I phoned Bemani today and asked them if they had any involvement in the Yaris TS Turbo. According to them it was deveoloped by Toyota Switzerland and TRD.

I already knew my turbo is called IHI RHF4, but there are loads different RHF4 units.

Yesterday I disassembled my turbo and found another clue. On the inside of the compressor housing it says VF18.

When I googled it I found a forum post mentioning the Toyota Corolla Sportivo Levin AE112R. Apparently 100 of them were sold and they had a turbo called IHI RHF4B VF18. That turbo was also used as the primary on the JDM Subaru Legacy B4 twin turbo MY96 to 98. Here's a picture of a VF18 from said Subaru:
[Image: %24(KGrHqZ,!roFG6ktTf7hBR05kggknw--60_57.jpg]

And here's a picture of the turbo from my Yaris:

I've compared lots of pics with my turbo and I can only spot two differences. The rotation of the compressor housing is around 40 degrees off. Also, the wastegate bracket is mounted on top of the compressor housing on the Legacy unit and under the housing on the Yaris one. I've just bought a used Legacy VF18 turbo from the UK and as soon as it arrives I will be able to tell for sure.

Here are a few bonus pics of my turbo:

Great find about the turbo. If the outlet angle is the biggest problem maybe you can turn it by just bolting it in a diffrent angle. Looks pretty much the same turbo.
Anyway great car nice to follo the project
