rig-pig my one has been working fine in the cupboard for years its kind of in the mid of the house and i still get a sig in the garage no probs and its the bt hub i have

Awesome, it'll be essentially where it is at the mo so location won't change, it'll just be in a cupboard rather than outside as it currently is.

One other slightly odd question, does a network socket just have a plug on the back for a normal network cable or does it require some wiring?

how do you mean mate? most houses don't tend to have network sockets in them more RJ45 phone sockets which you put (depending on type of internet e.g. cable/adsl) a filter to thr phone socket then from the filter you split a adsl cable to your router then a phone cable to your landline.

This is a bit random, but I just wanted to know about network wall sockets - if you wanted a socket in one place and another in another place - but all the two sockets would do is to connect the two locations, nothing else.

And what the wall sockets have behind them - are they like AV sockets which you still use a normal cable buried in the walls and plug them in to the back of the socket or are they like telephone sockets and require wiring?

yes it's possible and fairly straight forward however have you thought about using powerline adapters instead?

Yep I am currently using those as well, but while they're quick it's not as quick as a direct network connection - so I have a plan while doing a bit of redecorating to put network sockets in where I can.

Just wanted to know whether it can be a DIY job for a complete novice like me or would I need someone who knows what they're doing Smile

if you buy cat5 cable and the facia plates then its quite simple.

you just connect the cable to the back of the facia (similar to a phone socket) and job done..

i have done this through the wall and outside the house and back in again upstairs..

That's perfect, exactly the sort of thing I want to do.

Cool, will bear that in mind if I have any technical questions Smile
