The radiator let go on my car this morning and it seems to have taken taken the head gasket with it as it wouldn't run properly after the rad was refilled until it had cooled down sufficiently. My own fault as its been leaking a while and I've not got around to fitting a new rad

Is there anything to be careful of when doing a gasket on one of these? It all looks easy enough?

Im just hoping its not a cracked head and I'll get away with just getting it skimmed?

Any tips would be much appreciated

Thanks

Hopefully with just a light skim you'll be OK..

Have you tried and ECU reset before you do any major work... Any management lights on??

T-lex or Stav would be the best to speak to on the 1GFE engines.

Interesting you should mention about lights.

The first indication i knew something was wrong was because the eml light came on and the traction control light started flashing. I then realised the temp gauge was reading stone cold and pulled over as soon as i could.

When recovered home about an hour or so after it happened it started like normal an i was able to reverse it onto the drive.

I'm going to fit the new rad and run it up to see what happens. I thought at the time that it was water getting onto a plug causing it to have the starting issue and the gasket might have resealed once it had cooled? Suppose I'll know soon enough if it does it again once up to temp

No not yet but it lost all its coolant so i don't think there is a fault there.

Its 100% the rad that has caused all the problems, I'm just not sure if its done the HG at the moment?

What exactly does the eml and flashing trc light mean?

Yeah thats what I'd expect too?

I can only assume that because there was no water around the gauge sender it was reading cold?

The sensor on the rad is the fans I don't know if it does the gauge mate

Im going to fit the new rad tomorrow and see how it goes.

If the coolant level drops or the temp starts to increase over normal I'll know its the HG

If it's reading cold I'd check the thermostat. That would make you loose coolant quicker as well.
The sensor would go high as the block would be hot as it's not being cooled I'd of thought.

Change the rad, check the thermostat, refill the system, reset the ecu to get rid of the warning light then see how it goes.

Check the coolant level as well once bled and run up. If you're losing coolant it could be the headgasket
