That doesn't necessarily mean they weren't big :tongue_smilie:
Seriously though smartphones were already pretty big, Apple just made them massive - and brought the appeal to everyone, not just businessmen and technophiles.
My first smartphone was the P900 back in 2003 I think.......

are we not getting confused between what we class as a smartphone and a business phone though?
to me a smart phone is touchscreen, with games, music, etc etc not a hand held pc like module such as the nokias,........whci to me are more of a business phone?

Again not true at all, they were just different. Designed around functionality for businessmen, rather than lifestyle devices for high school girls.
This is the difference that Apple brought about, the actual device or what it does hasn't actually changed that much (except for naturally evolving as all technology does).

How about the Palm Treo, fantastic phones and were very popular back in 2001 onwards, in fact Palm dominated the handheld market for years.
Nokia Communicators started in 96 and had several incarnations over the years, also very popular.
Apple invented NOTHING new and the only thing they brought to the handheld market was fashion, it suddenly wasn't geeky to be seen with a smartphone.

Nope not at all, the whole point of a smartphone was that it was like a micro PC - it sort of came from sort of the merging of pocketPCs (the name gives it away) and mobile phones into one device.
To be fair though if you've never really used smartphones other than the iPhone you don't have the best frame of reference It's all the apple brainwashing that makes you think that we were in the dark ages before the iPhone and then the messiah of phones arrived :tongue_smilie:
