steviewevie Indeed, you do get coolant noise but normally it's pretty obvious as you say, sounds like trickling fluid and doesn't really fit the description given in the original posting here.

I have had a try with some of the suggestions - seems to be something to do with heating/aircon - since the noise stops when temp turned to 0. seems nothing to do with coolant/cassette deck etc - I have never had a cassette in it and the noise is still there even with the radio/cd/ipod etc turned off. It is only intermittent and not very loud - will keep tabs and report back. Any other suggestions welcome. Thanks for replies so far.

cassette, 8 track- its all old skool...
steviewevie It'll almost certainly be one of the motors controlling the flaps. See this diagram which shows their location - there's "air mix", "air inlet" and "air outlet" servo motors.

How long does it keep going for when you turn the ignition off ?
