Dan_Turism0 my bro has a iPhone 4 and I have friends with the 3GS and the SGS really does poop on them all, I can't honestly see why anyone would pay upwards of £150 for the handset when the SGS is available free.....

When the original iPhone came out, although it lacked a few basic phone features, the actual OS was miles ahead of everything else. Apple's problem now is that iOS hasn't really moved forward at all since then, they've added the odd feature here and there but no real change.

Android on the other hand is almost an all new OS with each update, and from what I've heard of Froyo it's a huge jump forward from Eclair.......with that kind of progress and such a vast range of handsets Apple need to start doing something a little more than advertising and pretty packaging.

A point well made but i think they are playing the waiting game and not showing their cards to early,

They got the phone right..................has evolved
They got the market right..................very much still there
The got the OS right............not really moved on

If i where in there shoes i'd be thinking...................."so how much can a smart phone actually do? how far can we go before it becomes dead-end tech?"

I would sit back and observe the likes of samsung / nokia / blackberry and most of all the android market,

and start stealing their ideas as they progress

Apple spent all the money developing the first smartphone and the tech behind it, now everyones caught up and copied them to a certain extent, they will sit back and enjoy,............

The biggest powerplay for apple is their brand,

If samsung released a new phone tomorrow which is the same as the galaxy s but it incorporated the RFQ chip for wireless payemnt (like barclay card) there would be some hype.................and decent sales

If apple did that a month later,......sales would be ten times that of the samsung

I totally agree with you re: samsung bringing something out - but Apple aren't fighting Samsung, they're fighting Google and that's a whole different battle. The reason why Android has overtaken iOS in the US is purely down to range, now that Android has caught up in terms of usability, it now offers so many different handsets to cater for different people's requirements so it's easy for many to think why should I have the same phone as everyone else when I can have something a bit different.

In the fickle world of this type of tech, they simply cannot rely on one good idea though. I doubt they are waiting to copy others and that simply wouldn't be innovative at all, I imagine they do have something new cooking but they should keep a watchful eye over Google is doing.

Yeah i see your point,

but i think the limit of what a phone can be and what a phone can do itself could be the deciding factor,

they will only ever have x amount of pixel camera, the highest def recodinf will only ever evenutally reach 1080p etc etc

the real breakthrough will be a 3d phone, as the way the TV's are going

we've had touchscreen for years, we've had wifi and 3g for years, the only latest innovation of any substance is amoled screens/high res screens

so i think hardware wise its getting close to finished already?

Lol you just agreed with what I was saying Smile

My point was that they can't hide behind pretty hardware anymore (because the others are doing it too), and really need to develop the OS the way Android is going.

Oops, bit of a mistake there Wink

Apple were miles behind the big names when it came to the smartphone era.

Nokia have been pumping out smartphones since 1996.

Sorry mate but smartphones were big a long long time before apple got in the game.

I could rhyme a list off as long as your arm of phones that were doing the "magical" things that an iphone can do years before hand.

Just because you weren't aware of them doesn't mean it's not true :Chair:
