I am of the opinion that massive bandwidth is wasted on an individual PC - you far exceed the speed of your hard drive very quickly, not to mention most people use onboard NICs which are rubbish. It's virtually impossible to get more than 30mbit out of 802.11g wifi especially if you have more than 2 devices on your wireless network, and as well as that you then have to find a server which is configured in such a way to allow an individual download to use stonking amounts of bandwidth, which no sensible host is going to do - most of them would rate limit an individual clients connection so as not to end up with enormous bandwidth bills. So really, the only use for it is p2p transfers and using services like rapidshare, both of which you've touched on in this thread (BTW I'm not convinced that advertising taking part in copyright theft on a public forum is a particularly brilliant idea!). Phil for example would see a far greater increase in 'useability' if his upload speed were increased by 500Kbit/sec than if his download speed were increased by 5Mbit/sec. The rest of it's just pub figures Wink

Work Smile I recently completed a project for our new campus-wide internet connection, and that's it while it's in use by 700odd students.

Depending on which technology you use, you may not have a choice. Bittorrent certainly uploads while you download, and the algorithm used in it slows your download speed if you severely throttle the upload so you can't stop it. If you stop the torrent from running once the file's downloaded then you're not a long-term seeder but you're definitely still sharing it to the world while you download Smile

Here's some amusing figures for you, total transfered over our connection for November:

Download: 14TB
Upload: 4TB

simple solution is use a downloading programme such as freedm - http://download.cnet.com/Free-Download-M...01621.html which handles torrents and has no stupid algorithms Smile

It's part and parcel of how bittorrent works mate, other seeders in the swarm report via DHT as to how well your node is performing and you get offered less blocks from the higher speed seeders (or no connection at all if you're really mucking it about) if you're not uploading. That's why when you throttle uploads to tiny amounts or can't get through your router you get terrible transfer rates. If you're downloading something on bittorrent at any significant rate, you will be uploading/sharing.

IIRC Saraj uses rapidshare though so it's all rather irrelevant to him!
