Im not bothered about all the technical details, as long as i get over atleast 85mb, rather then the 50-75 i get now, and over 100 when they increase it to 120 !

toxo I'd love to know how the f**k they're supplying that much bandwidth to people. It's *so* expensive to rent transit from peers these days, and given the way these services have rocketed in the last 5 years they can't possibly still be relying on deals made by NTL, so where TF is it all coming from?!

I guess very few users spend extended periods actually using all of their allotted bandwidth, (when 50-100mb is available) and so there is plenty spare to go around?

Saraj Im not bothered about all the technical details, as long as i get over atleast 85mb, rather then the 50-75 i get now, and over 100 when they increase it to 120 !

I know you want to have the speed you feel you are paying for, but what do you do online that 50 is not enough for?

I find results from Speedtest.net to be inconsistent, and prefer to test using http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics which I find better. It also gives streaming as well as download speed. (Though do still use the Speedtest app on my phone!)

alot of people ask me that

Last time I left Virgin for Sky this time last year, Virgin warned me that Sky may cap my usage, and according to they records I downloaded on average 90-100Gb per month. whether this was true or not, but I reckon it was.

I downloaded alot of american dramas and movies, not forgetting gaming. iplayer, demand 5, itv player.

I had 50mb before and was happy, so thought ill splash out and get 100mb.

Today I am having lots of problems with a wireless connection wired it seems fine, so switched back to my sky untill they fix it tomorrow.

Right had a engineer come out on Monday, who couldnt really help, he said he is going to escalate it and someone would ring me back, waited nobody called, I rang them myself and they said the job has been closed !

they checked they systems on tuesday and said something else is wrong in the area and are going to fix it within 48 hours. so today im getting 85+ on ethernet, and around 60 on wireless.

They said to me I should get 95+ on ethernet and 75+ on wireless, so will keep an eye on it for a few days and then prob ring them again.

Might just switch to 50?

That just makes no sense to me at all. Your wireless connection is between you and your router. That is where things like G, N, 54, 108 etc come from. But that is just a link from point to point. It's literally the equivalent of having a wire from your device to your router. So it seems totally wrong to me that they can say you will have 95+Mbit on a wired connection but 75+ on wireless. Surely if you have a decent 'N' connection to your router, that should be faster than 95+ so it should make no difference to your internet connection. Your internet connection is the bottleneck (i.e. the slowest link) so it makes no difference how fast your wireless or wired links are, provided they are faster than the slowest link in the chain.

That said, I find in general it's difficult to find a hard drive that will actually write steadily at 100Mbit/sec, so at that point your hard drive will become the bottleneck, not the internet connection. That's part of the reason I find these 100Mbit/sec internet connections so bizarre - in 2006 I maxed out a very well-specced PC with a bittorrent client and a 54mbit leased line, which had a SATA2 drive.

So, how do you know you are receiving a 100Mbit/sec internet connection, where your computer could actually be the slowest link in the chain...

I had problems with my virgin when i had it, do you use the super hub? If so go into the settings and you can turn off the wireless and turn it into a standard modem. Then buy a decent N spec router (i got a Link one) connect it to the super hub and away you go. Seems a lot of hassle but i got max speeds wired or wireless and never had another problem
