IS300 talk to me
Re weight difference, the stats you have found are almost certainly for the base model of each car. Isn't the spec of the bottom end IS200 pretty rubbish, where the IS300 has electric seats, LSD, satnav(?) etc as standard? Also as has been mentioned, the autobox will certainly add weight.
We found this with MR2s, there is a figure floating around on the internet of 1280kg, but this is for a poverty spec n/a with a solid roof. It's also a dry weight. Mine was 1450kg with half a tank of fuel in it! If you're that bothered about weight loss, take your car to a weighbridge before you start, that way you will have a true idea of what you've gained/lost.
I wondered that as well. As you say the 300 is fully loaded from the factory so that will affect the weight. Anyone know what the weight distribution is like on them?
Im pretty set on the 300 now and found a few that i like. What manual gearboxes fit and are easy to convert im guessing the r154 or v160 are the obvious choices is it just a case od getting the right bell housing and a new prop made?

i think the is300 weight distribution is 54/46, thats why adding stuff to the back lilke subs and amps helps with the distribution, if turboing the cheapest reliable box would be the r145, the v160 fits but are so expensive, you will need a custom prop shaft or apparently a propshat from a toyota sequiola does the job. none of them are really easy jobs as you will need a standalone ecu to run the manual box.
Or you could get an adapter for a 350z gearbox, which has almost the same ratios as the V160 and is easily as strong as an R154. Up to you though, the final gear is almost identical on the 5 and 6 speed so you don't gain much in terms of top speed.
there are places that build A series gearboxes, but it will cost you pretty much the same as converting to a worthwhile manual.
reco2k Whats the strength of the auto box? Im looking longer term here so will ptobably turbo it first then gather parts together gradually for the manual conversion when the auto box pops lol

is300_dino please do it the opposite way round get the gearbox strengthened or swapped first ive learned the hard way, used up majority of my savings on the engine so now having to save to strengthen the box. mines running at 350bhp and 305lbft, and its knocked the gearchange timing solenoid in to malfunction. so unless you want to tune it to lower levels and risk it like i did i advise doing the box first.
theres a few american companies that supply uprated internals for the is autobox this will give you an idea of figures to build the auto box to compare with a manual swap http://WWW.LEVELTEN.COM/SearchResults.asp?Cat=41
