It should come off with something like Autoglym Tar Remover, or a similar product.

Cool, I'll try the washing up liquid first then - can I get that googone stuff in any store or do I need to order online? Also what should I use to remove it? Afraid to use an abrasive pad on the paintwork........

you can buy online, think it is a US product.wipe it on,let it soak in and should wipe off and may need a second go
try washing up liquid first or as steve says tar remover may work.
