Don't think it's a software problem Oli, sounds like a hardware one to me.

Can you try a different cable to plug in the hard drive ? Could be the connector that's damaged and causing a problem. Or maybe the hard drive/enclosure itself.

IS200 Turbo project now just about complete ! See my thread here and leave your comments.
Now running standalone Syvecs ECU and no stock ECU !

Oli This is the high reliability of windows for you.
First problem on that machine since we bought it around 10 years ago - sounds pretty reliable to me :tongue_smilie:

I'm guessing Apple products don't have hardware faults then? Oh, no they do, and to quite an alarming proportion!

I don't think the fault is in the external hard drive, it's pretty new and I've got it running on my machine all the time with no problems. The problem does seem somehow linked to the USB ports so it could be something to do with the motherboard.

One other symptom I forgot to mention earlier was that over the last few weeks every so often the fans would kick up really high for no real reason - could something have overheated and shorted on the board?

Did the fans not used to speed up in the past, is that a new thing ? Or is there a chance you've noticed it now because you're looking for problems ?

Could be to do with the motherboard and the connection to the USB ports. Or could be the power supply itself. If it's 10 years old I'd hazard a guess at the power supply, motherboards don't generally just start failing like that, though there could be a problem where continual use of the USB ports has broken/damaged a connection.

Is there a fan on the power supply ? Is that still working ok ? I've seen in the past a power supply fan give up, then that leads to knock-on problems like the whole PC heating up, and the power supply itself failing.

No it's definitely new, it was making such a racket that I'd have definitely noticed it if it had happened before.

Not really sure to be honest, how many fans should it have? Not sure if it's relevant but it's one of those Sony all in one desktops so is mostly made up of laptop components.

When I open up the casing, what exactly should I be looking for?
