IS200 Caliente - Codename Dragon.
IS200 Caliente - Codename Dragon.
Hi everyone. Been lurking around looking for a suitable home for my new found Lexus fetish and the OJC sounds like just the ticket.
Greetings from the Colonies! Interested to hear from any other OJC members in Australia and look forward to meeting up.
I have never in a position to buy a car purely for myself until Jan this year. We had a disaster with a VW Golf MK V that cost us $10000 in repairs until we got rid of it. With 15K in my pocket (Yes...someone actually bought the Mk V off us...) I was looking for a reliable second hand car. So I drifted toward toyota and then graduated into Lexus. After prodding around and making some enquiries on some IS300's that had done 200K+, I saw this and it was love at first sight.
Its a 2002 IS200 Caliente Auto with 120K on the clock. The Caliente were a special edition with only 75 ever made. Mine is number 73. Nice to have a limited edition of something.
It has some nice touches like metallic pedals and scruff bar, leather steering wheel and a moonroof.
It was factory standard when I got it with the only thing the previous owner had done was put in a Kenwood CD Headunit with a fold out video screen and an amp.
It came with the Premium Sound package which I'm sure sounded great back in 2002 but now sounded a bit tired and flat. So rip out the old headunit, front and rear speakers. I replaced the Kenwood with a Pioneer AVH-X3600DAB (50W RMS) unit. It has all the mod cons like Bluetooth, Digital (DVB+) Radio, Apple and Android support. I bought a Double DIN adapter off EBAY (AERPRO LEXUS IS200/300 DASH FACIA KIT) but it turns out to be a bit rubbish as it leaves me no room for the faceplate and makes the head unit just sort of stick out like a sore thumb. Also has warped a bit. Will replace with something cleaner when I get funds for Audio Upgrade part 2. Put in a Pioneer ND-BC6 reversing camera which I can't live without now. . Installed a set of PIONEER TS-D1602R 60W RMS speaker in the front. Had to make a spacer but they do the job and are still in the original speaker grill which looks good. Left the factory tweeters in place as have not found suitable tweeters that can go in and not wreck the grille. In the back I put Pioneer TS-A6975S (90W RMS) 6 x 9s. Stupid me didn't measure properly as the whole in the back is actually for 7 x 10s. Luckily my auto electrician had an adapter that he could fit in which did the job nicely. Sounds nice and loud with clear bass. Audio upgrade phase 2 will involve AMPs and Subs me thinks.
Nothing to see here - move along.
As you can see nothing exciting has been added to the engine bay....YET. Aim is to save pennies and prostitute myself to save enough $$$ for a super charger. Needless to say that will take along time.
Other mods I have done so far
K&N Air Filer
Gates Timing Belt and new Water Pump
NGK Irridium Spark Plugs
Frameless Wipers
New Master Key (Previous Owner only gave me 2 valet keys.)
New Floor mats. (The Caliente badged mats had become ratty so had to replace the front ones with standard Lexus ones.)
A Dash Mat
Cabin Air Filter (Car smelled like old cigarettes in the morning. Was not nice. )
It is currently running a bit rich averaging about 15L per 100 Kms.I have replaced both the O2 sensors and the MAP sensor but the issue remains. I've just ordered some Denso spark plugs to see if I got a dodgy NGK plug. Also going to replace the fuel pump with an uprated one in preparation for the SC.
I have just ordered new Brembo front and rear slotted Disc's and Brake Pads to ensure quality braking. Will get the calipers painted red and lexus logos on them. Stay tuned for pics. Also ordered new KYB shocks and cornering feels soft and squidgy.
Next week I hope to purchase some new 18 inch RIMS and tyres to replace the 17 inch factory wheels. Again will post pics.
I'm going to keep with the red and black styling as much as possible hence the Dragon code name. As it is my daily driver I'm not going to do anything too radical with the engine, but as I love to tinker and optimise no doubt there will be plenty of mods down the line.
upgrade the roll bars; best thing you can do to the IS chassis in terms of handling/ride.
welcome along great car and great to have you on the siite.
we have one member who is currently in Oz for a while enjoying the change of life style.
wit regards ur handling as above uprated ARBs is the way forward a few names out there Obv TRD and a few others but that should defo be on ur list of Mods.
supercharger is a great plan and if your any good at Fabricating you can easily get the ball rolling on that one.
keep us posted with ur plans
Some more pics.
Hindsight.
My bad. This car is a tad lower than my previous cars. Kind of mistake you only make once.
Some Bast&%d in a car park swiped me on their way out.
I will eventually have to get it resprayed and the side strips are starting to come off so will need to get them glued.
TRD roll bars should be easy to get hold of where you are, the fitment is the same as the altezza. Failing that get a set of hotchkis ones from the states
