toxo As I said, don't use anyone down the phoneline that hasn't got their own kit in the exchange. Pay for peanuts, get monkeys...

Ahh sorry, think I misunderstood what you said the first time!

These are the ones it came up with on the search using the first link, the second one just comes up blank?

I'll speak to Sky and O2 today and see what they say. So far BT are good as they can do the install without sending an engineer out but they are just too ridiculously expensive!

If she has a working phoneline then there's no need for an engineer from any provider, so it should be a level playing field.

I'd definitely be approaching Sky and O2 (as you have!) from that list.

Another vote for O2 - had zero issues with them. Kit installed and working since day one, don't think we've rung them since ordering 3 yrs ago.

No working phone line at the mo according to all the ISPs (haven't had a chance to check), only BT and Virgin have said they can do the install without a visit so looks like I'm going to have to choose between the two of them (as the others can't even do a weekend install).

Any difference between the two? Does it make sense to go with BT simply because it's their line?

If you pay BT 1 year up front they have very good deals.

After deciding to go with BT, they then offered me an earliest installation of 5th November. So after all that I've ended up going with Virgin, as they've guaranteed it will be done within 10-14 days. Apparently this is because they have their own equipment in the exchange and their own engineers, so don't need to rely on BT Openreach as the other providers do (hope they weren't BSing me and this is all true!).

Interestingly after putting in the address and all, they came out with an expected broadband speed faster than BT and others quoted which seemed odd seeing as it's the same line and the same distance to the exchange? Are they just being slightly optimistic or does having their own equipment mean that it could be a faster connection?
