not with the thermostat but with the cooling system, as it boils at a lower temp when under pressure so will be steam not liquid going around the system
You could do with getting the codes read with an OBDII reader to see why the engine check light is on. Could be the speed sensors, especially since you've had a front-end collision (i.e. the front sensors).
By the way, the thermostat on the IS200 is in the side of the water pump, so that's neither right at the very bottom or very top, surely ?

Edit - ok, I guess it's at the bottom of the cooling system really, since it's taking the coolant outlet from the radiator into the water pump.

I actually started my car and drove it down after the collison happened!

Ibby at this stage of your rebuild i think a obd code reader some thing like this would be a worth while investement.
The one i have listed is acheap one.
